49ers Release Ahmad Brooks

Aug 26, 2017 9:58 AM

The San Francisco 49ers have released Ahmad Brooks.

Brooks joined the 49ers in 2008 and was their longest-tenured defensive player.

Last week, in a preseason loss to Denver, Brooks was replaced in the starting lineup by Eli Harold, 23, who will earn $634,000 in base salary on a contract that runs through 2018.

“Ahmad can still do things — I think everybody knows that,” head coach Kyle Shanahan said. “He’s going to help somebody this year. … It’s really been nothing against Ahmad. It’s how are we going to get 53 guys on this team that are the right type of 53 guys? You think of guys that might not be as ready in Week 1, but they might be ready in Week 3.”

Steelers Thought They Had Long-Term Deal Done With Le'Veon Bell

Aug 19, 2017 7:23 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers expected to reach an agreement with Le'Veon Bell on a long-term contract.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Friday that Bell nixed an offer "at the last minute," even though team officials thought they had come to terms with his agent on a contract paying more than $12 million annually over five years.

Bell's agent, Adisa Bakari, said he and his client never had any agreement with Steelers. "All stories to contrary are false," Bakari told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Bell skipped training camp and hasn't signed his $12.1 million franchise tender.

Bell told ESPN after the deadline expired that "I feel I'm worth more than what they are offering me," but that he would play a full season in 2017. Bell could report to the team as early as next week, though the team has maintained it isn't sure exactly when he will return.

NFL Not Currently Considering Josh Gordon's Reinstatement

Aug 17, 2017 2:02 PM

Roger Goodell said the NFL is not currently considering the reinstatement of Josh Gordon.

Gordon hasn't played a regular season game since 2014 and his reinstatement petition in May was denied.

Gordon participated in preseason before the 2016 season.

The Browns would welcome Gordon back to the team even though they've largely moved on from him.

Eagles Release Ryan Mathews

Aug 15, 2017 1:57 PM

Ryan Mathews was medically cleared from his neck injury suffered last season and immediately released by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Mathews suffered a herniated disk in his neck in Week 16 last season.

"We want to thank Ryan for his contributions to the Philadelphia Eagles over the past two seasons," the team said in a statement. "We spoke today and had a productive conversation about his future and the direction of our team going forward.

"First and foremost, we are glad that Ryan is healthy and has been cleared to return to football activities but given the current state of our running back position, we feel like it is best for both sides to go in a different direction. We wish him all the best as he continues his career."

The long-expected move gives the team $4 million in cap relief.
